P012: Royal Flying Doctors of Australia |
---|
Australia is a huge continent with most of its population and major medical facilities located along the coast. For medical flights in other countries, see Charter P004 or P010, for example. The Royal Flying Doctor Service was created to provide medical services to four remote regions of Australia. Go to the RFD website for information: Flying Doctors to read about the operations. RFDS missions fall into three general categories: 1. Clinic runs. The aircraft departs the base and proceeds to various regional centres for clinic duties. This is essentially a mobile doctor’s office which provides medical checkups, vaccinations, and surgery facilities to areas that have no medical centres. For example, you might want to do a Charleville clinic run taking in centres such as Birdsville, Quilpie, and other such areas. Clinics are also hosted at private landing strips or properties where the neighbours will drop around for an RFDS visit. 2. Remote retrievals. These are out-and-back missions where you depart your base for a specific destination. This can include landing at cattle and farming properties or you may be coordinating with local ambulance services to pick up patients from regional airports. These flights are usually time critical. 3. Hospital transfers. Hospital transfers are conducted from regional hospitals to larger facilities. For example, the Charleville service may be required to transfer a patient from Roma hospital to Brisbane. Transfers are conducted at the local airport with the support of the local ambulance services.< /p> Use your imagination WestWind and RFDS fitted out all aircraft listed below for medical transport purposes. Retrievals and transfers are done 24/7 and in most types of weather. Landings may be made at private airstrips. Caution: soft earth due to rain.
