P162: Volcano Charters (Part VFR) |
---|
The Austral-Asian Society of Vulcanologists has charters to observe a variety
of active volcanic sites in the Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific
regions.
Locations of active volcanoes in the region are located at: Active Volcanoes You may select any volcano in Regions 2, 3, 4 and 12, except the Hawaiian Islands. American vulcanologists look after these. The Society requests departures from Darwin, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Auckland. Fly to a regional centre near the volcano of your choice. Pick up a helicopter or small aircraft such as a Beech 1900 or Beech 58 for a VFR tour of the volcano. The vulcanologists require a couple of low speed passes of the volcano. A flight to Mt. Erebus will require your aircraft to have the range to fly from Australia or New Zealand to Antarctica and back non-stop. Should you be unavailable for the long-haul portion of the flight, you may begin your charter from the international airport nearest to the volcano. Return. Note: it is unlikely these volcanoes have navaids associated with them, so navigation with reference to a map is essential. Latitude and longitude for the volcanoes should be available from the Society via the website. WARNING: Do not enter the volcanic ash cloud of any erupting volcano. Entering an ash cloud can cause complete engine failure, damage to the aircraft skin, and serious burns or other health issues for your passengers. Also avoid close proximity to any actively erupting volcano. Eruptions can throw large rocks and lava 5 to 10 miles from the volcano. Safety of the aircraft and passengers is of primary importance.
