Passenger Charter Details
P235: Fishing in the Himalayas VFR |
---|
This is the experience of a lifetime for your passengers. But only the best of
the best pilots should attempt this one. Your aircraft is a Cessna 208
Amphibian. How an amphibian got into the Himalayas is anyone’s guess, but it is
WestWind's now!!
Depart Katmandu, Nepal (VNKT) and steer heading 330. This will lead you to a valley. The valley ends near two small lakes, one long and skinny, the other just to the west is more circular. This is your reference point. From here you must try to land on and depart from three lakes so your passengers can go fishing. Are there any fish in the Himalayas? That's not your problem. Your problem is that the aircraft will be operating right on the edge of the performance envelope. The lakes are around 16,000 feet (yes that is sixteen THOUSAND feet) above sea level, and your aircraft has a ceiling of around 20,000 feet. Pick your lakes VERY carefully. It is easy to get in, but very hard to get out again. After you have landed on three lakes, navigate back to the two small lakes. The passengers will pay a hefty bonus for landing on the long skinny lake and getting out again. Only the insane would try and land on the small circular lake next to it, but yes, it can be done, but you REALLY must know about high altitude flying and know how to handle this aircraft right at the edge of the envelope. Once you have completed your charter (the moderately difficult, the very difficult, or the insane version), head back to Katmandu for a landing. Navigation hints: Use the GPS (with terrain turned on) to plot your best course and find some good lakes. Use the map to see your course and find your way back to the small lakes. The creator of this charter also wrote, "This fishing tour is an absolute killer. The C208 has a ceiling of around 20,000 feet and most of the terrain is higher than that. Performance is severely hampered by the altitude (good simulation work here). The two little lakes at the end are worth a try just for the challenge alone. The small lake took me three aborted takeoffs before I figured out exactly what I needed to do, and believe me, it does have to be pretty exact technique!! The scenery is absolutely spectacular even in FS9 and you really get the feeling of speed and altitude as you fly up and down the valleys. This is actually an extra bonus challenge as you need to pick your route fairly carefully. I had the C208 at around 2,000 feet above published ceiling, but wasn't game to push it further. Airspeed is WAY down at these altitudes as well since the prop has bugger all air to grab on to."
