P244: Tahiti to Tahoe in the Goose |
---|
WestWind retired executive, Ken G, needs a pilot to ferry his Grumman G-21
“Ken’s Goose” from his winter home in Tahiti to his summer home on Lake
Tahoe.
Yes, you will be flying "Ken's Goose." Are we lucky or what? Thank you, Ken! The pilot will deadhead to Faaa International Airport (NTAA) where the Goose will be waiting. The pilot will then be responsible for planning the flight from Faaa International Airport (NTAA) to a water landing on Lake Tahoe, CA., U.S.A. Since the Goose has a very short 695 nm range, many WWA pilots wonder how Ken got the airplane to Tahiti in the first place and how they are suppose to get the airplane out of Tahiti. Ken will only remark that “pilots need to think west.” Some pilots seem to think that Ken is blowing smoke and that they need to disassemble the airplane and put it into the An-124 or Cargo 747. Others point to the fact that it is a Goose and can make a water landing, thus you just need coordinate for some fuel in the middle of the ocean. Can this really be done in a G-21? Yes it can. The pilot will have to fly the airplane west island hopping to New Zealand, then to Java, over to Indonesia, up India, across the Middle East, across Europe, over to Iceland, Greenland, across Canada, and finally down into Lake Tahoe. The total distance is greater than flying around the world! However you choose to complete this challenge, just remember that the last pilot who put a scratch on Ken’s Goose has not been seen or heard from again. The Category 1 pilots' rumor is that Ken gave the pilot to the local Tahitians who betrothed him to marry the ugliest woman in Tahiti. Airplanes for the trip from Faaa Intl. (NTAA) to Lake Tahoe:
