P278: Northern Canada Medical and Supplies |
---|
Westwind Airlines has been awarded a prestigious charter in Northern Canada that calls for Westwind Pilots to fly Medical (Medical Workers and Patient Transport), Passenger and supply missions for the local communities that are not connected by anything other than airplane. Pilots are to base themselves out of either Yellowknife, Northwest Territories or Iqaluit, Nunavut. Pilots are to fly supplies out of these cities and fly passengers and medical patients back in. WWA has a Recognition Award for Humanitarian Flights for pilots who fly 150 hours of humanitarian oriented Executive or Cargo Charters. Humanitarian Charters are Executive P004, P006 through P013, P025, P062, P067, P191, and/or P278 combined and Cargo Charters C032, C035, C044, and Operation East Wind Events. Westwind pilots are also advised that several of these airports do not contain refueling facilities, so proper fuel and flight planning is essential. Further, pilots are advised that the airports may not be paved; rather, bituminous or gravel runway surfaces may be encountered. Further, the weather may change very rapidly. Pilots are advised that during the early spring/early fall, temperatures may be near -40c and that proper survival gear is necessary. Finally, pilots need to study NOTAMS at their arrival airport(s) to prepare for hazards such as dangerous wind shear as well as native wildlife runway incursions. Finally, runway conditions may change daily as the spring thaw occurs. Pilots should be prepared to at the very least fly over before landing, at the most be prepared to divert to an alternative field. Subsequently, pilots are also requested to fly in medical personnel as well as regular fare passengers from the south. Feeder flights into Yellowknife and Nunavut may be flown from any Westwind Hub. In addition, pilots are also asked to fly into these cities from Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal. Finally, pilots may fly from Yellowknife to Iqaluit in any aircraft of their choosing. Both airports are modern facilities with paved runways. The flight routes are at pilot’s discretion. Pilots may fly to as many communities during the mission as they wish.
