P347: Oroville Dam Observation by Helo |
---|
With a height of 770 feet the Oroville Dam is the tallest in the United States. Located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains and completed in 1968 the dam is owned by the California Dept of Water Resources. The dam supplies water to over 23 million people throughout California and is the largest state-owend water storage facility system in the US. In February of 2017 the service spillway chute suddenly experienced a failure. Chute flow was adjusted in an effort to monitor and control the damage. As a result of this and major storms in the area the resorvior rose until the crest of the emergency spillway was topped for the first time in history. Water flow down the hillside created massive erosion which led to the evacuation of over 188,000 residents in the area. The California Department of Water Resources has contracted WestWind Executive Charter Division to take their inspectors from (KORV) Oroville Municipal Airport to the dam site so that they can inspect the dam as well as the spillway structure from the air. Inspectors request to be flown by helicopter to the site for the observations so that where they fly can be controlled while doing their visual inspections. Once the inspectors are finished return them to KORV.
