Aircraft choice will depend on the size of the hunting group.

The hunters will tell you the date and time to pick them up for the return trip. Take into consideration that the hunters will hopefully be returning with a few hundred pounds more cargo than they departed with so be sure to use an aircraft that can handle the load.

WestWind Alaska Regional is proud to offer two bear watching adventures. Two local bear watching tours have contracted us to bring passengers from Anchorage to their locations. Depart Lake Hood Seaplane airport (LHD) and fly passengers to their selected tour location:

    • Option 1: Chisik Island is approximately 100nm from Lake Hood on a heading of 200 degrees. Land near the southern point of the island and taxi to the boat that will be waiting for you. The tour guide will provide you with an expected pick- up time. Be on time so we don’t leave our passengers and tour guides waiting.

    • Option 2: Crescent Lake is approximately 98nm from Lake Hood on a heading of 220 degrees. Land on the southeast portion of the lake and taxi to the campground at N60*21.37, W152*51.55. The tour company will meet you and your passengers at the beachfront. You are more than welcome to stay at the campground and enjoy the facilities while your passengers are on their tour. As part of the contract, the tour company will provide you with lunch just like they do their tour guests.<.li>

Once headed home from whichever tour your passengers chose, give them a low flyover of all the beautiful scenery on the way back to Lake Hood. As safety is our priority, this aspect of the return flight will be at Captain's discretion as weather conditions allow. With ATC permission, give them a low flyover of Anchorage also. Honor any reasonable request your passengers have. The tip they give is yours to keep.

    • AKP005: Kahiltna International Airport Adventure

      Scenic Charter Scenic Charter!

During the summer months, Kahiltna Glacier becomes known to the McKinley faithful as Kahiltna International Airport. Kahiltna glacier is southwest of Mt. McKinley’s peak. During the summer months the weather is clear enough to fly ski planes into the base camp located there. The base camp/airport is due west of Mt. Hunter at 62*57.29N, 151*14.05W at an elevation of approx. 7000ft. Kahiltna Airport is approx. 113 nm from Anchorage on a heading of 343*.

Meet your passengers at the Anchorage executive ramp and fly them to Kahiltna. They may just want an aerial tour with a glacier landing, or they might be planning to camp out on the glacier for a day or two or hike up Mt. McKinley. Either way, we are here to provide quality air service for them. If you're leaving your passengers on the glacier you will need to arrange a pick up time to bring them back to Anchorage. Also, you are authorized to pick up personnel from the glacier and bring them back to Anchorage. Flying with passengers makes the airline and you, more money. Be resourceful.

As always, safety is the priority. Do not fly into a situation you cannot get out of. Check the weather before departure and during the flight.

Any snow ski equipped plane will work for this charter. Use the an appropriately sized plane to accommodate the planned load of passengers and luggage.

      AKP009: The Real Frozen Tundra

One could easily argue that football is the most popular high school sport and it is the same in Alaska. Barrow, AK is home to the northernmost football field in the world. Named ‘The Real Frozen Tundra’ by ESPN, Barrow is home to the Whalers.

Barrow has contracted WWAK for air service for their football program. WWAK is responsible for bringing the visiting teams in and getting the Whalers to their away games. A team size is about 50 people (players, coaches, support personnel), so a Dash 8-300 or Dash 8-Q400 is required for transporting the teams. If there is a group of fans wanting to travel, a smaller prop aircraft can be used to transport them. The Barrow hub will have the information about possible fan transportation.

Since the Barrow football program was featured on ESPN, diehard football fans from around the US have come to Barrow to experience football in its most primitive means. Each week of Barrow home games, fans fly into Anchorage and need transportation to Barrow. Barrow HS has contracted WWAK to provide this transportation also. Since these fans are well off financially, we provide jet service from PANC to Barrow. Any charter jet, CRJ-200 or smaller, can be used. The number of passengers will determine which aircraft you use. This contract only covers the Barrow home games.

The ESPN story on Barrow football can be found here

      Aircraft:

      • Team transport: Dash 8-300 or Q400
      • Local fan transport: any Cat II executive prop plane
      • Outside fans: any CRJ-200 or smaller executive jet aircraft

      Schedule:

      1. 8/11 Barrow @ Monroe Catholic - Fly team to Fairbanks Intl Airport
      2. 9/01 Valdez @ Barrow - Pick up team at Valdez Airport
      3. 9/08 Seward @ Barrow - Pick up team at Seward Airport
      4. 9/15 Sitka @ Barrow - Fly team to Sitka Airport
      5. 9/22 Barrow @ Eielson - Fly team to Eielson AFB (special arrangements have been made for permission to land on Eielson AFB), arrive by 1030 local time
      6. 9/30 Barrow @ Nikiski - Fly team to Kenai Municiple, arrive by 1400 local time

The games in Barrow are played early afternoon, so visiting team must be on the ground by 1030 local time. As part of the air service contracts, you get free entrance into the game.

      AKP017: Salmon Lake Resort Charter

Westwind's Salmon Lake Resort, located on the western shore of Alaska, caters to tourists in the summer months for fishing, hiking and sight seeing tours. In the fall the hunters show up and in the winter the ice fisherman try their luck on the frozen surface of Salmon Lake. Passengers maybe picked up from any location and hauled into Nome, Alaska with its 6001' runway in larger or executive aircraft, if required, and then ferried from Nome into Salmon lake using smaller aircraft that have the ability to land on the 2499' gravel or snow landing strip.
